Short answer

For a full acre, buy a mower rated above 1 acre, because real yards have beds, trees and narrow paths. The Segway Navimow X450 is the best fit: rated for 1.5 acres, 17-inch cut, 84% slopes, wire-free. The Navimow X430 is rated for exactly 1 acre and costs less, so it suits open, simple lawns. For a dealer-backed option, the Husqvarna Automower 440 iQ is rated for 2 acres on simple layouts.

An acre is 43,560 square feet. That’s the size where robot mowers stop being a convenience and start being a real time saver, because pushing or riding a mower over an acre takes a good part of a Saturday every week of the season.

It’s also where many robot mowers fall short. A 7-inch deck that’s fine on a quarter acre would need to run nearly nonstop to keep up with an acre, and a mower rated for “up to 1 acre” usually means 1 acre of open, simple lawn.

I chose these five based on the published specs and owner reviews, and I focused on the numbers that matter at this size: cutting width, runtime, rated area for irregular lawns and how the mower finds its way across a big property.

Why rated area isn’t the whole story

Makers rate area for ideal conditions. Husqvarna is one of the few that publishes two numbers: the 440 iQ is rated for 2 acres systematic and 1 acre irregular, per Husqvarna’s 440 iQ page. The 420 iQ is rated for 1 acre systematic and 0.5 acre irregular.

That gap tells you a lot. A lawn with flower beds, trees, a play set and a few narrow passages takes far more mowing time than an open rectangle of the same size. If your acre is complicated, buy a mower rated well above it.

Three numbers decide whether a mower can keep up:

Spec Why it matters on an acre
Cutting width A 17-inch deck covers almost twice the ground per pass of a 9-inch deck
Area per charge Fewer trips to the dock means more mowing per day
Irregular-lawn rating Closer to your real yard than the headline number

1. Segway Navimow X450: best for 1 acre

RTK + visionSegway Navimow X450The right Navimow for a full, irregular acre.9.3/10 our scoreCheck price

The X450 is the bigger sibling of the X430. Segway rates it for 1.5 acres, and up to 1.8 acres depending on layout, per Navimow’s X450 page. That headroom is exactly what a real 1-acre yard needs.

The rest of the specs match the X430: 17-inch cut, 0.75 to 4 inches of height in quarter-inch steps, 84% (40-degree) slopes, under 68 dB(A) in a no-load lab test, and a recharge in 90 minutes or less with 224W charging. Segway says it covers up to 9,600 sq ft per charge and up to 1 acre in a day. Navigation is tri-frequency Network RTK with 360-degree VSLAM, VIO and AI vision, with no perimeter wire.

Why it’s the pick:

  • 1.5-acre rating gives room for beds, trees and irregular edges.
  • The wide deck keeps mowing hours reasonable.
  • AWD handles slopes and rough spots common on bigger properties.
  • Two years of Connect+ included, versus one year on the X430.

What to watch: it costs about $500 more than the X430 at around $3,000. It’s as heavy and bulky as the X430, so plan on two people for unboxing.

2. Segway Navimow X430: best value for an open acre

RTK + visionSegway Navimow X430The best all-round wire-free robot mower for open yards up to an acre.9.4/10 our scoreCheck price

If your acre is mostly open lawn, the X430’s 1-acre rating may be enough. It has the same 17-inch deck, 84% slope rating and navigation as the X450, per Navimow. Smart Home Compared lists 110 minutes per charge and a 12.8Ah swappable battery.

Why it’s a good choice:

  • Same hardware as the X450 for about $500 less.
  • Network RTK included where coverage exists.
  • Up to 120 zones.

What to watch: no headroom on a full acre. Techaeris says hot weather, steep slopes, mud and tall grass can cut runtime to about 90 minutes or less. The X430 showed as sold out on Navimow’s store when I checked. Full details in my Navimow X4 review.

3. Husqvarna Automower 440 iQ: best dealer-backed

RTK-GPSHusqvarna Automower 440 iQThe Husqvarna to buy for a complicated acre.8.8/10 our scoreCheck price

The 440 iQ is Husqvarna’s big-lawn wire-free model. Husqvarna rates it for 2 acres on simple lawns and 1 acre on irregular ones, with about 138 minutes of mowing per charge and about 54 minutes to recharge. It has a 9.4-inch cut, 1 to 4 inches of electric height adjustment, 62 dB(A) and weighs 39 lb, per Husqvarna.

Navigation is EPOS with cellular connectivity and radar object detection. The EPOS reference station and plug-in come in the box.

Why it’s a good choice:

  • The irregular-lawn rating covers a real acre.
  • Long runtime per charge.
  • Can mix virtual boundaries with physical wire in shaded areas.
  • Husqvarna’s dealer network for setup and service.

What to watch: narrow 9.4-inch cut, so it spends many more hours per week on the lawn than the X450. The slope rating is 45% inside and 15% at the boundary, far below the Navimow. MSRP is around $4,300, and the US page listed it out of stock when I checked. More in Navimow vs Husqvarna.

4. Mammotion Luba 3 AWD 5000H: best for an acre with trees

LiDARMammotion Luba 3 AWD 5000HA strong choice for a wooded acre when it's in stock.8.9/10 our scoreCheck price

The 5000 version of the Luba 3 AWD is rated for 1.25 acres, per Mammotion’s US product page. It shares the line’s 80% slope rating, up to 215 minutes of runtime with a battery of up to 15Ah, 70 dB or less of noise, and the Tri-Fusion navigation: 360-degree LiDAR, Network RTK through iNavi, and dual-camera AI vision.

The H version cuts from 2.2 to 4 inches.

Why it’s a good choice:

  • LiDAR keeps working under trees, which bigger properties usually have.
  • Lifetime free iNavi on the 5000.
  • Long runtime.

What to watch: Mammotion listed the 5000 as out of stock when I checked, and it costs around $3,300. G Style Magazine reported false stuck alerts on the 3000H. Compare in Navimow vs Mammotion.

5. Worx Landroid Vision Cloud 4WD (WR344): best for a hilly acre

RTK + visionWorx Landroid Vision Cloud 4WD WR344A lighter 84% climber, held back by a small battery.8.6/10 our scoreCheck price

The WR344 is rated for 1 acre and 84% slopes, with RTK Cloud, a stereo camera and V-SLAM, per Worx. Cutting width is 8.7 inches and height runs from 1.57 to 3.54 inches.

Why it’s a good choice:

  • Strong slope rating.
  • No antenna; free 4G.
  • Easy to find at big-box stores.

What to watch: it’s the weakest fit here on paper for a full acre. The 5Ah battery gives about 50 minutes per charge per Smart Home Compared, and the cut is narrow. Worx lists a 1.5-acre version (WR346) if you want more headroom.

How many hours a day will it mow?

Robot mowers don’t mow once a week. They mow a little every day, which keeps the grass at a steady height and leaves tiny clippings. On an acre, expect the mower to be out several hours a day during peak growth in late spring.

Wide decks change that math. Segway says the X4 can cover up to 1 acre in a day. A 9-inch mower covers the same acre over more hours and more charge cycles. That’s why Husqvarna lists up to 24 hours of active time a day for the 440 iQ.

Cool-season grass grows fastest in spring and fall; warm-season grass peaks in summer. Many owners trim the schedule back when growth slows. My lawn care calendar shows the growth peaks by season.

Setup on a bigger property

Dock placement. Put it where the mower can reach the most lawn without long narrow detours. On big lots, a central spot saves travel time.

Signal. Walk the property with your phone. If cell signal is weak in parts of the yard, Network RTK may struggle there. A base station or LiDAR helps.

Zones. Split front, back and side yards into zones with their own schedules. The X4 supports up to 120 zones.

Travel paths. Narrow paths between zones, especially next to the house, are where RTK mowers lose their fix. Check owner reviews for how your mower handles them.

Edges. A robot won’t trim along fences and beds. On an acre that’s a lot of edge, so a cordless string trimmer is part of the setup.

What to look for in a 1-acre robot mower

  • Rated area at least 1.25 to 1.5 acres for a typical yard with beds and trees.
  • Cutting width of 15 inches or more, or a long runtime to make up for a narrow deck.
  • AWD if any part of the lawn slopes.
  • Navigation matched to your tree cover: RTK for open land, LiDAR or wire backup for shade.
  • Cutting height up to 4 inches if you grow tall fescue or another cool-season grass.

Is a robot mower worth it on an acre?

On an acre, a robot mower replaces a lot of mowing hours, and you don’t need a riding mower or zero-turn taking up garage space. On the other hand, a 1-acre robot costs about as much as a decent riding mower, and you still trim edges and clear leaves. I cover the full price picture in robot lawn mower cost.

My pick

For a real-world acre, the Segway Navimow X450. Its 1.5-acre rating and 17-inch deck give you margin. If your acre is open and simple, the X430 saves money. If you want a dealer to install and service it, the Husqvarna 440 iQ covers an irregular acre with a long runtime. For yards with heavy tree cover, the Luba 3 AWD 5000H when it’s back in stock. For smaller lots, see my main best robot lawn mowers list.

FAQ

Can a robot mower handle 1 acre?

Yes. The Navimow X430 and X450, Worx WR344, Mammotion Luba 3 AWD 5000 and Husqvarna 440 iQ are all rated for 1 acre or more. For a complex yard, pick one rated above an acre.

What size robot mower do I need for 1 acre?

One rated for about 1.25 to 1.5 acres if your lawn has beds, trees or narrow paths. Husqvarna rates the 440 iQ at 2 acres systematic but only 1 acre irregular, which shows how much layout matters.

How long does it take a robot mower to mow 1 acre?

It depends on cutting width. Segway says the 17-inch X4 can cover up to 1 acre in a day. Narrower mowers take more hours and more charge cycles to cover the same area.

How much does a 1-acre robot mower cost?

Roughly $2,500 to $4,500 in 2026. The Navimow X430 lists around $2,500, the X450 around $3,000, the Luba 3 AWD 5000 around $3,300 and the Husqvarna 440 iQ around $4,300.

Do I need a wire for a 1-acre robot mower?

No. All five mowers here can run wire-free. The Husqvarna 440 iQ also lets you add physical wire to shaded spots. See robot mowers without perimeter wire.

Is one robot mower enough for an acre, or do I need two?

One is enough if it's rated for your real lawn size. Two small mowers cost more, need two docks and double the blade and battery upkeep.

Should I get a robot mower or a riding mower for 1 acre?

A riding mower is cheaper up front and handles overgrown grass. A robot mower saves your time every week and keeps the lawn at an even height. If you'd rather spend Saturdays elsewhere, the robot wins.

Can a 1-acre robot mower handle hills?

The Navimow X4 and Worx WR344 are rated for 84% slopes and the Luba 3 AWD for 80%. The Husqvarna 440 iQ is rated for 45%. See my robot mowers for hills guide.
